Catching Up with Millie

I am so sorry it has taken me such a good while to post, but Gerti and I have been really busy. You know, we had that whirlwind weekend in Birmingham. We are planning an extensive trip to Independence, TX to tour and report on the Texas Baptist Museum. Ya got to know where you came from to know where you are going and on first look at the past by peeking through the museum window, we have no place else to go but up. At first glance the museum seems to be a bulletin board, potholders, and some dusty 6 foot tables. I know there is a good story there and finding that story looks to be a challenge. It will just be like digging through Greek or Hebrew, not that I really know how to do that. I know how to use a Strong's and Young's and all that tiny writing really gets to me. But get enough facts ( that sound good) and put them together just right and when you talk about the subject matter everyone thinks you are quite the scholar.

As much as I would LOVE to give you an update about our trip to Trussville, AL, there are more pressing matters that must be addressed. I just read this week in the Southern Baptist Texan about the new homemaking degree being offered by that institution of male bonding and ministry producing machine, Southwestern Theological Seminary. To think a busy man like President Paige Patterson takes time from what is surely a busy schedule of meetings and is thinking of all those precious young women who are praying about entering the ministry. I believe he has such a tender and soft heart for women and issues facing women cause he has a woman's name, Paige. A degree that includes, Western Thought and Culture, Greek, Latin, textile design and clothing construction, the intricacies of bagless vacuum cleaners, Pledge or Swifter...you make the decision, Easy Off Oven cleaner is it a blessing or a curse, and a historical look at modern appliances. The historical look at modern appliances is an apologetics course seeking to find the truth, should we do it like back in the day, use rocks and rivers for washing clothes, chop wood for our stoves and chip blocks of ice for refrigeration. This course is better known as, "What Would Martha Do?"

My feeling are so hurt that Dr. Paigeboy, as I like to call him, hasn't asked Gerti and I to be professors in this Master's degree program. We have been teaching women for years how to be penurious in the home and in Sunday School. Our lives in the past 20 years has been dedicated in demonstrating how to use Nativity Cookies all year long to tell the stories of the Bible. We even demonstrated how to take an ordinary shoe tree and make it into a lovely Christmas tree by using everyday items found around the home. Yet, no call from Patty Paige.

What surprises me is this, the degree program is only for women! Why I am sure there are a lot of male students enrolled in the Music degree program there at SWBT who would love to participate in this and have a double major.

Of course SWBT has acknowledged there were women in the Bible who were not all about the home, Deborah was a judge, Esther, who saved the whole Jewish nation from extinction (good thing she gave time to this endeavor instead of trying to finish up a sewing project), Lydia who was a business woman in Acts, Mary who devoted her life to knowing and worshipping Jesus, and the Proverbs 31 woman who is doing business deals. A reliable source inform me that SWBT chose to overlook these women as role models just like they choose for overlook key verses about men, such as fathers don't exasperate your children. This source gave the example of a Deacon whose children are well mannered and not wild and the verse that men everywhere should pray and lift holy hands. It is a well known fact that many men believe pray is women's ministry.

Oh the joy I can only imagine for the graduates of this homemaking degree in the future. While mopping the floors she can not only make them shine, but tell you the present active Greek wording and meaning for water, labor = shine. Imagine this precious young woman dressed like June Cleaver going through the Hebrew alphabet while polishing the few pieces of silver she received as wedding gifts.

This emphasis in course curriculum has not been offered since 1909. Shame, shame Paigeipoo. Ed and I were talking about all this last night. He said the statics show that more women than men attend church on Sundays. That women are more inclined to volunteer and to sacrifice their time and money for the greater good for the Body of Christ. He said that some men when facing the fact that women are making inroads into the traditionally male bastions decide to make rules and put restrictions on others and that they don't take a long, hard and prayerful look into their own lives and weakness. Weakness that must be surrendered to the Lord and to ask for His strength. Ed said to some men, going to church is like going hunting without a gun. What's the purpose if the power of the Gospel is watered down so that the moving of God is only welcomed in salvation, baptism, and giving.

Oh I hope that SWBT also looks into some much needed courses for women who work outside the home as assistants, admins, and coordinators for ministers in the church. Sometimes that is even an unpaid position or in some cases the job that pastor's wives have to assume, as well as run a home and raise children.

They need to also investigate some much needed emphasis for the men. Subject matter could include, Duct tape usage, minor plumbing repairs, how to entertain the children for an hour without using sugar or TV, and how to buy thoughtful gifts for wives...well there are just too many good ideas to list right now.

Paige, know this, Gerti and I are available to come teach. We don't want tenure and we can discuss salaries. Now, I am off to do laundry. I think I am going to pretend that I have my Master's Diploma in Homemaking from SWBT hanging over my washer and dryer. As I sort socks, my whole mindset will be on Western Thought and Culture.

How to know if you are old

It has been a while since I have posted. I thought Gerti might jump in, but she has had people at her house and this week several people's visits are overlapping. After all I did go out to her home and teach her how to blog on the 4th of July. Once she has something to say, and she usually does have an opinion, we won't be able to keep up with her posts.

So, I have been thinking how do you know when you officially are considered old. I still feel like I am 18 on the inside of me, but the outside of me keeps me out of denial. Here are some of my thoughts.

  • When someone asks do you have big plans for the weekend and your response is, Gee, I hope not! You might considered yourself old.
  • The first time you use the term young people in a sentence...I have to tell you...old!
  • I remember the first time the young man bagging my groceries at the Kroger called me mam, I went home and cried.
  • If there is a party and no young people are present...see the second bullet point and the talk all gravitates to recent operations, current operations or pending operations, you are at an old person's gathering.
  • When a late night out is 10:00 pm...old.
  • When dinner at 4:00 pm sounds like a good plan....old.
  • When you get the phone trees from the Adult Enrichment office letting you know that there are some fun day trips coming up and the fun trips include oh, visiting a cheese factory, going to see how boxes are made, or go out to Hunt Retreat to pick pecans. Old!
  • When transportation is always a bus...you are too old. I like seeing the wildflowers, Astro Games, plays in Galveston, but I want to go in a car. So, I am not as old as some.
  • Three words; Branson, Branson, Branson... old! old! old!
  • If almost every sentence begins with, "well why don't you have______" when speaking to a sales clerk...old.

Now I am not saying all of our ilk is fun seeking, bus riding, complaint oriented, tired and don't want to drive after dark, but it is close.

If you look closely at the picture in this post, you'll notice that both Gerti and I are holding thong underwear. Anytime I hear someone read that verse from Ecclesiastes about the strand of three cords not easily broken, I think several might feel the need to check and see if their thong panties are still holding up. That's the nice thing about being old, you don't need to buy thong underwear, our Grannie panties will bunch up on their own. I start singing, They've Got a Ticket to Ride when mine begin creeping up on me. Now you know the origin of the phrase, don't let your panties get in a wad. One has to be careful these days when one is trying to alleviate that situation... cause there are security cameras everywhere. Every since the movie Fatal Attraction that showed the goings on in some elevators, I believe there has to be hidden cameras. So a girl alone on an elevator can't pick her noise or much less pick her pa..... alleviate her delicate situation.

Well, I feel like a field guide leading you through the journey called getting old. If you have any comments please leave them for me and I will get to them as soon as possible. Remember if you have any questions that I can answer, send them this way too. Well, I have to go, it is nearly 3:00 and I have to get ready for dinner. Then I am going to go hear about an exciting fall trip to Branson. Then there are several day trips I need to check into. Oh, and I better see what Ed has the thermostat set on. I bet he is trying to freeze me out and has the dang thing set on 80. Then I am going to the church book store before it closes and ask why they don't carry more large print books. I mean really!

Hi from Mildred

Hello Precious Treasures of our Hearts!

Hello, my name is Mildred. I have sent the password and blog info to my good friend Gertrude. She might be a little nervous about jumping in here at first. I think she and Charlie are still trying to figure out how to work their VCR. I may have to go out to her home and show her how to do this. Once she gets over any nervousness she might have, I bet we can't keep her off the blog and oh what a blessing that will be. I don't mind helping her at all...Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. Gal 6:2

I rightly don't know what to tell you about to start off with. I wish Gerti was here to say something. Well, we love our church, I do know that. I have a quiet time, but Gerti seems not to have one or at least one she will admit to. We volunteer at church all the time and not once have we ever complained about it....no, no, no! Except the church really should do something about the pay, cause it stinks!

Gertrude is married to Charlie and he can build just about anything. Only you have to be careful to give him some dimensions and some direction. Once, we asked Charlie to build a little house for us to demonstrate our gingerbread house decorating on. You know gingerbread isn't just for Christmas. Anyway, he built us a lovely house; the only problem being we could have carried a couple of terriers in this thing. It was as big as a dog carrier...and it was heavy. We could barely carry it in for any demonstrations we were giving.

I am married to Ed. What can I say about Ed, well, he is just like Jesus. Ed never changes, he is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Ed is also know as the quiz master. That man can ask more questions in a five minute period and drive me batty, but Ed is helpful around the house. I appreciate that. I just had to write that cause Ed began asking me why I hadn't said anything nice about him.

From time to time we hope to address issues facing the church, families, and whatever the heck we are upset with at the time. It would be wonderful if you all have any questions we could answer, to put those in the comment section of the blog. We will answer them only if we feel like it.

Just to show you how we do things, I would like to write the words to one of my favorite back in the day Carpenter songs. For you young ones, the Carpenters were a famous brother and sister singing soft contempo rock group. They'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony...
We took the words to one of their top songs, Superstar and rewrote them as a tribute to Marion Jaynes, Minister to Preschool and Kindergarten.
Long ago, back in a distant day
I said I'd volunteer
but only for the day.
Your pleadings, they were so sweet and clear
now that just one day
has turned to twenty years.
Don't you remember you told me
it's just a few babies.
I said I'd think about it and say maybe.
Now it's babies, babies, babies oh more babies
they're everywhere
even in my hair.

Nothing like a good Carpenter song to make one feel mellow. Well, I got to go clip some coupons. Remember until we can get Gerti here...ask some questions and hopefully with all our expertise at nothing, we will be able to answer.

Love, Millie
